Music Slash Art, Newcastle’s underground Basement Bar and Late Rooms is undoubtedly one of the Toon’s most hidden gems.
Visually the place is incredibly unique and refreshing. There isn’t an inch of MSA left untouched whether it’s the breath taking bespoke artwork covering the walls or the innovative and impressive interior. The setup of the bar almost gives off the feel of a member’s only club but with a different vibe and atmosphere and it is clear that the place has been put together and managed with love.
The bar boasts an extensive and extraordinary cocktail menu with festive treats added. By the end of the night I was still to try a cocktail I hadn’t enjoyed and the welcoming and knowledgeable bartenders were on hand with their own recommendations and new creations when I fancied mixing it up. It is clear the art isn’t just on the walls; it’s in the way the drinks are made too which can be enjoyed at student prices midweek-Bonus!
Visiting on a Thursday I was pleasantly surprised at not only the music- Motown and Disco, which had me on the dance floor before my first cocktail had been shaken but the crowd too. Expecting a student night surrounded by beards, ill-mannered teens drinking doubles from policarb cups and possible pretentiousness I couldn’t have been more wrong. Whether the music is to blame, the drinks menu or the ambience its clear MSA appeals to everyone.
An ultra-fresh and cool change to the normal bars and clubs in Newcastle, the two floor contemporary basement bar gives room for quaint and quiet after work drinks or dates on the first floor or a full scale night out with the help of the mind-blowing speaker system on the lower level. With banging nights from Thursday to Saturday playing from Hip-hop to House I could choose to start my night here, end it here or just drop by for the one!
A total breath of fresh air in an amazing City, the only bad thing about my night out at MSA was leaving!
