Newcastle United made an announcement recently concerning the contracts of some of their squad players. There was wide speculation about whether or not Jonas Gutierrez would remain on the books at the club after playing a pivotal role in the final game of the season against West Ham.
But it was not to be as NUFC announced that Jonas, along with several others, would not not offered a new contract. He took to Twitter to thank fans for his time at the club (and support during his battle with cancer) and also give a parting shot to owner Mike Ashley…
Two things I learn from my illness how you can support a player (newcastle fans) and how you leAve a player alone (newcastle owner)

Other players who were not given contract extensions include Ryan Taylor, Jak Alnwick, Remie Streete and Adam Campbell, with the latter allegedly finding out his fate on Twitter rather than from an official call from the club.
The news concerning Jonas has divided opinion amongst Newcastle fans. Some suggest that he is of sufficient quality to deserve a place in the squad and his contribution in the last game alone should be enough to guarantee at least another season at Newcastle. Others argue that Newcastle need to move forward and remove any ‘dead wood’, suggesting that to keep Jonas would be for nothing more than sentimental reasons and not in the full interest of the club’s future.
One debate that has been doing the rounds on social media has seen fans argue that Jonas should definitely have a contract extension ahead of others players who did actually make the cut, namely Sammy Ameobi. Here is the club’s official statement regarding his contract renewal…
Newcastle United striker Sammy Ameobi has been offered a new contract at St. James’ Park.
The 23-year-old, who sees his current deal expire at the end of June, played 25 Premier League games last season.
The True Geordie certainly believes that there should be space for Jonas at Newcastle United if there is space for Sammy.
