The attraction of The Magpie is the fact it offers high-quality, fine-dining fare but with a fun and friendly laidback nature. There’s no frills or formalities, and with welcoming staff, you can feel instantly at ease, without the typically reserved nature of fine dining restaurants.
Being in the heart of the Quayside, The Magpie offers a menu catering for all that visit the area. The lunch menu provides heaps of tempting small plates which is ideal for those after a quick and tasty bite after a checking out the latest exhibition at the BALTIC Centre For Contemporary Art or perhaps enjoy the set menu before a concert at the Sage Gateshead. However, the beautiful backdrop of the River Tyne and the stunning setting of the Grade II listed building is all you need for a relaxing and enjoyable meal.
The Magpie has the perfect mix of beautiful surroundings, relaxing ambience and delicious carefully-crafted meals. As a result, it is a favourite with restaurant critics and has won several awards including OpenTable’s Diner’s Choice and is featured in the esteemed Michelin Guide and Harden’s Guide too. Furthermore, the restaurant also regular features in lists of the top ten restaurants in Newcastle Gateshead.
As you arrive, you’ll not only be greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff, but a beautiful airy setting thanks to the Grade II listed Victorian architecture complete with high ceilings and plenty of light. You’ll be given the menu to peruse, in which new specials are added almost daily. The head chef focuses on fresh seasonal produce, ethically sourced from local farms and markets. With lots of seasonal ingredients, the chefs use creativity and flair to transform local ingredients into mouth-watering, beautifully presented dishes.
Lunch is a laidback tapas-style affair with a menu full of small plates; all are reasonably priced at two dishes for £10 or three for £15. The lunch menu may feature delights such as Seared Lamb’s Belly with Graceburn Feta and Roast Garlic Aioli and a Scotch Egg with Homemade Brown Sauce. There are also vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options such as Beetroot and Almond Ricotta with Pear Puree and Endive.
The evening menu offers a la carte all week as well as a set menu from Tuesday until 7 pm on Friday. With three courses for £25, you’ll definitely want to indulge. There are some delicious desserts to tempt you, such as Banana and Dulce De Leche Choux Buns with Horlick's Sauce and Honey Custard Tart with Roasted Peaches and a Lemon Thyme Bavarois or an artisanal English and French Cheese Board for those who don’t have such a sweet tooth.
There is also a separate menu for Sunday Lunch, a Tasting Menu and a Children’s Menu too. What’s more, The Magpie also hosts regular events from lunches with special guests, to themed nights and tasting sessions.
