The Centurion

Located within Newcastle’s Central Station, The Centurion is a pub housed in a former luxurious waiting lounge for first-class train passengers and has been a local icon since 1893. Today, The Centurion invites visitors to immerse themselves in an atmosphere reminiscent of the opulent 1800s.

After a period of neglect, the turn of the millennium brought a new life to this remarkable venue. A meticulous restoration project ensued, paying homage to every exquisite detail. The Centurion’s lavish interior now showcases breathtaking tiles and murals, designed by the renowned John Dobson, reflecting a bygone era of decadence.

At The Centurion, the past meets the present through an unforgettable fusion of food, drinks, and sports entertainment. Sample handcrafted dishes, indulge in delicious cocktails, and catch major live sporting events on a massive 4.5m HD projector.

For a more intimate sports experience, book one of the premium lounges, perfect for your own private hideaway. The Stephenson and Ridley lounges, each seating up to 20 people, are equipped with 84″ 4K screens and private bars. Whether it’s a cosy reunion, a high-stakes sports event, or a special celebration, these lounges offer a comfortable and private setting.

As you enter the pub, you’ll notice the extraordinary tiled roof, which was once painted over with red paint in the 1960s. This unique feature, now worth millions, has been carefully restored to its original glory. The Centurion is not only a place to enjoy a beer or ale but also a testament to Newcastle’s vibrant heritage.

During weekdays, The Centurion serves as a haven for daytime drinkers and those waiting for their trains, while weekends attract cheerful stag and hen parties. With live jazz performances every Tuesday, this pub also caters for fans of live music.

This iconic pub offers something for everyone, with a main bar serving a range of cask ales, a snug bar for a quiet drink, and a deli bar dishing up freshly made snacks. It’s easy to see why its popular amongst local residents as well as those waiting for their train to depart from the station.
